Hello Everyone:
Took the day off from the family holiday festivities to do my own thing. This worked out to blogging and reading. There was an interesting conversation going on Facebook today. It had to do with an article the British newspaper, The Guardian, posted on why one highly regarded female actor considers a man placing his arm around a woman's neck a sign of ownership. I posted a comment to the effect that I don't consider it a sign of ownership when my guy puts his arm around my neck, shoulders, or waist. It's just a causal public display of affection not a sign that he "owns" me. Such nonsense don't you think? A casual PDA becomes a signifier of sexism. Some people just need to lighten up. What next, a peck on the cheek is considered sexual violence? Okay, with that one I would say if it's in the context of two family members or lovers, then it's a sign of affection. If it's in the context of an alcohol fuel frat party where you don't know the other person, then it could be considered sexual violence. The real problem is that we've a collection of coddled thin skinned people, afraid to say or do anything that could remotely be considered offensive. I hate to say this but as much as I find Donald Trump odious, he says whatever is on his mind, damn the consequences. Alright he spews toxic waste but my point is that we have become so infantilized that something as innocuous as an arm around the shoulders is construed as sexist behavior. If the person doesn't like any form of PDA, then he or she should speak up. Really some people.
