Yesterday, mom surprised me, she wanted to meet the new guy. What was so surprising is that she wanted to meet him, knowing full well that he's Afro-English and not Jewish. I don't really think she's softening her stance on the relationship but I suspect that she understands that he's a friend (a very good friend) and he's going back to the UK soon. She figures he'll be out of my life in a short time and I can find a more " appropriate" (white and Jewish) suitor. Regardless, I think it's great that she wants to meet him. By the way, the new guy endeared himself yesterday by presenting me with a brand new coffee maker. Who'd of thought I'd be so happy over a kitchen appliance and a packet of tissues he got me last week when I was hip deep in allergy hell. I'm really going to miss him. I guess I could call the bf and see what he's up to although after the excitement of the new guy, going back to the bf would be a little bit of a let down. At least mom won't give me a hassle about the bf because she's deemed more "appropriate." What do I think about all of this? Each person has their merits and demerits. I like them both a lot and can take the good with the needs improvement. What it really comes down is how I truly feel about one versus the other and I haven't figured it out yet. Both have made their case quite well. What mom and everyone else thinks is irrelevant. The big thing with the new guy is the fact he's not Jewish. It is important for me because I don't want to deal with competing religious systems-Christmas versus Chanukah et cetera. Even though we're both disconnected from the faiths we were raised with, I'm still stuck on the idea of both halves of the couple flying under one banner. I think it makes things smoother for the couple when they share similar religious values. Yes, a lot of religions do share the same values but it also has to do with shared customs and traditions. Would I ask the new guy to convert? If it got to a point where marriage was on the table, then yes and not because of my mom or anyone else. Right now, however, this is not a subject worth bringing up.
