Yesterday was quite productive in terms of the job search. I applied to the City of Santa Ana for a full time position as a cultural resource specialist and to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for a part time job in Collections Management. My work mate referred to the the municipal job as working for a bunch of fascists who take three hour lunches. I replied that I'm more than happy to take those fascists for every penny and benefits they've got. The job at LACMA would be really cool because then I could walk to work and I could inch my way into a full time position. We'll see what happens next. Once again, I'm trying not to get my hopes up because I've had spurts like this before and nothing's panned out. Still, I rather fancy the job at LACMA not just because it's close by but also it would be a good career starting point. Also, with a job at LACMA, I have access to all sorts of really cool cultural events and, if I remember correctly from my undergraduate internship, my security badge gives me free admission to a number of museums around town. Woo Hoo. The job in Santa Ana is also good. It has the pay and benefits but not really the urban lifestyle I prefer but I would be able to go back to Los Angeles on random weekends. It's a good career type job with possible room for growth. Having never worked in a government job, I don't know how the promotion process works. The job in Santa Ana also uses an oral, video recorded interview as their main decision-making tool. This is a little scary because I'm not the world's best extemporaneous speaker, especially is I don't have notes. I'll worry about that if and when I get to that point. I hope something pans out, even on a part time basis. It would be kind of nice to have something to help pay the bills.
