Time of Transition

Hello Everyone:

My Tuesday is off to a descent start.  Painters showed up at the apartment this morning to do the kitchen.  I'm just glad something good has come out of the whole exterminator extravaganza.  The not great thing, is this morning I started find dead cockroaches all over the kitchen floor.  EWWWWW.  I suppose it's better than find the place swarming with live ones.  I read somewhere online that there are farmers in China that actually raise them for food.  Gross.  O.K. I'm grossing myself out right before lunch.  Let's move on to something a little more pleasent shall we.

I'm enjoying the autumn-in-Los Angeles weather.  Autumn in Los Angeles usually means warm sunny days and very cold nights.  There's an old joke that goes Los Angeles does have seasons: fire, floods, mudslides, and earthquakes.  I think we're in the fire season because of the annual Santa Ana winds that make their appearance this time of the year.  Anyway, jokes aside, the fall season is my favorite time of the year and not just because my birthday comes in November.  I see autumn as a glorious season where the leaves turn vivid hues of red, orange, and gold.  There's a nip in the air and the world seems to be slowly shutting down for the year, at least in the Northern hemisphere.  Nobody really seems to pay attention to this transition from six months of activity in the Spring and Summer to six months of rest in fall and winter.  That's part of the rhythm of nature.  For some people, the colder weather marks the beginning of a holiday season that goes from Halloween through New Year.  I could never wrap my head around the whole holiday thing.  Even some of the frenzy around Chanukah leaves me cold.  Fortunately, mom and I are of the same mind when it comes to Chanukah, we don't make a big deal out of it.  I remember going over to sis and BIL's house for a holiday dinner and seeing all these Chanukah decorations, prompting me to comment, "all that was missing was a tree."  A Chanukah bush doesn't count.  I'm sure for small children it's all fun but for me, not so much.  Anyway, fall is such a wonderful, yet unappreciated, time of the year.  It's a time to celebrate a transition from activity to rest.
