The Oddball

Hello Everyone:

I think I've finally accepted the fact that the City of Santa Ana is genuinely interested in meeting me.  I still think the only reason is they need to fill their "oddball" quota.  That's my term for when employers want to meet people who don't really seem to fit neatly into one category or another such gender, race, ethnicity, skill level and education, experience, et cetera.  We're the people who are usually creative and a little too smart to be doing anything else other than what we do.  We don't particularly care what anyone else thinks, we dance to our own beat.  We chafe under too many rules and restrictions.  In short, we oddballs are own people.  I think I just described a good chunk of the world's population.  Either that or an Apple commercial.  My thinking is also based in some low self-esteem, why would anyone be interested in me or this just a courtesy interview.  Regardless, I fully intend to present myself as authentically and honestly as possible.  If they ask me about something I posted in my historc preservation, I will hedge.  I stand by the comments I make.  How else can I go about it?  I never could fake demure.  I can do polite and charming but quiet and demure, not going to happen.  I never could understand why women are always encouraged to be very modest about themselves and their accomplishments during interviews.  I somehow don't get the impression that employers want a timid mouse who'll hide in the corner all the time.  The flip side is they don't want someone so obnoxious and obstinate that no one will want to work with them.  I fall somewhere in he middle.  Yet, when it comes to speaking about my blog or anything else I've done, I will not hesitate.  I'm proud of my work and take responsibility for things the things I do good, bad,mor indifferent.  if all this ruffles the City of Santa Ana's feather, then maybe it's not the place for me.
