Well it's Monday and my car is finally in the shop. I ended up going to the place near my house. Hopefully, it's just a matter of needing a very long overdue tune up. Right now I holed up at a coffee place across the street from my building so I can easily go home for lunch. If you live in a city like Los Angeles, you definitely need a car. Unlike some places, the city sprawls all over the place. I blame the city planners for this one. The same thing is true for suburbia. Yet despite all the grand plans for a mass transit system, L.A still does not have a reliable, efficient mass transport system akin to New York or London. This can make getting around so difficult. I don't mind walking but some places I just need to take the car. This is especially necessary if I have to carry things like the bottomless pit of a work bag. In the meantime, I'm limited to where I can go.
What's interesting is the contrast between my bf and I on this subject. He grew up in suburbia where people were pretty isolated. In order to go to school or run errands, one has to take the car. He still lives in suburbia and hasn't adjusted to a more urban life. So, for him, walking to Starbucks is like a hike across the desert. For me, I like the fact that I live in an urban environment where I can walk to the grocery store and there are people going in and out every day. When I lived in San Jose, California I had to adjust to a quieter environment. This was strange because San Jose purports itself to be one of the biggest cities in the San Francisco Bay Area. I say strange because I lived in the downtown area and it didn't feel like a "downtown." It felt more semi-suburban. I would love to find out how I would fare in a city like New York. I'd probably love, who wouldn't?
