The Immortal

Hello Everyone:

Wow what a day. This morning I woke up to the news that David Bowie passed away from cancer. What a shock. I still can't believe that he's dead. David Bowie wasn't supposed to grow old, get sick, and die. He was such a presence in every aspect of pop culture. My fondest memory is seeing him live at Dodger Stadium years ago. It was the most amazing evening. It was an all request concert. Concert goers were asked to call a local radio station with their requests for the evening. It was such a trip, never to be equaled. The social media has been blowing up all day with this story. Pretty much knocked the farcical Golden Globes off the news cycle.  I found myself thinking about all the personas he adopted and the conclusion I came to was his personas-Ziggy Stardust, the Thin White Duke, the Spider King-were all ways of mirroring society at that particular moment. Instead of directly addressing themes of alienation and loneliness, he let his music and adopted personas speak for him. This was true to the end, his new album Black Star was his way of saying good bye. Not only was David Bowie an icon, he was a gentleman. Stories of how he extended the hand of friendship to other musicians. He also had a private side that did not take to the social media to chronicle his life. Some people have boundaries. Some people should to keep their lives private. David Bowie will be immortal. Many pop and rock musicians owe a huge debt of gratitude to him. The stars are different because the Star Man is among them.
