Once again random violence has struck. By now, the world knows about the shooting that took place this morning in the United State Naval Yard in Washington D.C. At least one person, with a Navy work history, opened fire on the yards, killing at least a dozen people. Scary and sad when you think about it. One minute you're at work going about your day, the next you're running for your life from a mad man. Of course, once all the chaos of the moment settles, there'll be the usual loud voices for and against tighter gun control laws. Insane isn't it? I suppose this is what our world has become. Part of work place procedure is learning how to deal with a crazy man (always a man) in the building. Sad.
Changing the subject to something happier, the Jewish holiday of Sukkot is coming up on Wednesday evening. This is a holiday that's actually kind of fun. The holiday, like all the major holidays, has it's origins in the Torah. Originally it was used to commemorate the fall harvest and the giving of first fruit to the Temple in gratitude for a good harvest. Jewish people are told to build temporary dwellings, Sukkot, outdoors and live in them for eight days. The first two days and the last two days are holidays and the intermediary days are a semi-holiday, meaning you can travel or do other things. While the majority of Jewish people don't actually live in the Sukkot, they do take their meals in them, that's the fun part. Some, like my BIL and nephews actually sleep in them, sort off like a backyard camp out. The really fun part comes on the first Sabbath of the holiday, when it's customary to through a get together for neighbors, friends, and family. I'm pretty sure there's some religious significance to it, but I forgot. Anyway, this shindig is usually on a Friday night. The bf and I are going this year. This is one of those moments when I don't mind sitting separate from the men. Hopefully it sould be a good time with lots of good food, drink, and company.
