I was getting extremely annoyed yesterday, mid-blog, over the fact that my laptop wasn't charging. I took it over to the Apple store, where a friendly genius, he truly was, informed me that I needed a new charger. Ugh! What was I going to do? I don't exactly have the money for it laying around at the moment. As I was walking home, depressed, I suddenly remembered that I had an Apple gift card from the time I recycled my old laptop. The amount on it is more than enough to pay for the new charger. Perfect. I immediately went home and frantically started looking for it. I opened drawers, looked through papers, all the while getting more angry at myself for misplacing it. Finally I just gave up and called the Apple store, who put me in touch with the company that issued the gift card. I called them this morning and got the matter resolved very quickly and drama free. Hurrah. It was just so frustrating to have all that happen. It not so much the charger, it's that fact that I need a functioning device to write and apply for work. I'm currently on an iPad, which is all well and fine but it does have limitations. Now that I think about it, perhaps I can talk to the geniuses to see how I can make my trusty iPad work more efficiently. One step is to get a cover with a built in keyboard. I'm inspired by a New York Times article about a former Bell Laboratory being rehabilitated in order to accommodate "untethered" workers. Meaning, employees with tablet devices and smartphones. Well I have both and it certainly is easier to carry around than a full-sized laptop. It's an intriguing notion and one that would definitely give new definition to mobility. I believe that is the future of work, untethered. Laptops are great and do provide some measure of mobility but a smartphone and tablet device are better, at least lighter to walk around with. That's something I can definitly get with.
