I want to use this space to share some thoughts on the passing of Robin Williams. Robin Williams was one of the true comedic geniuses of our time. His gift for improvision and mimicry made each of his performance a thrill ride. However, I'll always remember him as an actor. As a child, I first got know Robin through his television series Mork and Mindy. Robin played an alien life form named Mork who was sent to earth to learn about humanity. In many ways, Mork was like a child, full of innocence and mischief. I will always remember Robin for his stellar performances in Good Morning Viet Nam, The Fisher King, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Good Will Hunting. In each of those movies as well as his now classic Dead Poets Society, Robin demonstrated that he could go beyond "Mork" and portray characters who have this amazing ability to change the lives of those in his orbit for the good. At the same time, he battled depression and addiction. These insidious and mysterious physical, emotional, and spiritual diseases can strike anyone regardless of how they are. I don't much about this world but what I do know is when it comes to mental illness and addiction, the response is always "Some One Else Not Me." This attitude needs to change. All I can say is that Robin Williams is now truly resting in peace. He battle is over. For the rest us, in honor of his memory, if you or some you know is dealing with mental illness, addiction and alcoholism, please get help before it's too late.
