It's Monday and time to start the week. The events at Santa Monica College have put a bit of a damper on the week but we shall persevere. It's odd that in the span of about two months, gun violence has tainted two things I'm passionate about, running and education. I continue to run and I firmly believe that school is the best road for opportunity. The Boston Marathon Explosion and the shooting at SMC won't dampen my enthusiasm for both. I won't let it happen. What really is disturbing is that in both cases, tragedy could've been prevented through early intervention, tighter gun control laws, and rethinking school privacy laws. It's equally disturbing that a person with a history of emotional issues can walk into a gun shop and by whatever they need to commit mass murder. As in the shootings at Virginia Tech six years, the shooter had a known history of emotional issues, yet, instead of intervening, the school's hands were tied. Campus police had to wait until something happened before it did anything and now five people: father and daughter; father and son; a middle-aged female student are dead. What was the shooter's fate? He was killed by police, good, save the California the expense of a trial and sentencing. I actually feel sad for the mother of the shooter who lost her husband and son. Her immediate family gone an instant because her youngest son, the shooter, couldn't deal with his parents' divorce and had other problems. The same sentiment holds for the family of the brothers that committed Boston Marathon bombings. Two sons gone, one dead and one facing capital charges, essentially gone forever. Sad isn't it?
