Hello Everyone:
Today was "Big Block of Cheese Day" at the White House. What is "Big Block of Cheese Day" you ask. On February 22, 1837 Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States directed his aides to set out a 1,400 pound block of cheese and invite the general public to come to the White House to discuss any issues or make requests. The cheese was for anyone who was hungry. Since the time of President Jackson, the United States has grown considerably so inviting billions of people to come to the White House may be a little out of the question. So, in this digital day and age, the tech geniuses in the West Wing came up with a virtual "Big Block of Cheese Day" via Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. Thus, the average person can sit in their pajamas and talk to someone at the White House via the social media about anything and everything. I first heard of "Big Block of Cheese Day" on the television show "The West Wing." I have no idea where the writers found this moment in the history of the American presidency but, somehow, the writers managed to pull together a whole episode on this day. Yours truly, participated in the event. I posted a simple and direct message on the Facebook page and got three likes on it. Basically what I said, I have a masters degree but no job and plenty of debt. My mom is retired but is barely getting by on her pension and social security. I would like to find a job in my field so I can have a measure of independence and dignity, not get a job that requires me to wear an apron and make coffee. Short, sweet and to the point. I doubt the right people are going to see my message but at least I made my plea, as did others. There were the usual assortment of questions and comments about a wide variety of issues. Some of them were serious and others not so much. At least there was the opportunity to say something, whether that translates into something, who knows.
On the way to the grocery store today, I was describing "Big Block of Cheese Day" to mom and she asked me if the right people saw my post. I told her I doubted it and I don't expect any response from the Obama Administration. Mom said you never know, you could experience divine intervention. I don't believe in divine intervention, mainly because it's failed me. There have been times when I've done the work and prayed for divine intervention, only not to have it materialize. Maybe I gave up too quickly on it or maybe it hasn't happened yet. Either way, I'm not holding my breathe.
Anyway, the rest of the day is going well. I'm still under the weather, but getting better. A friend of mine sent me a link to a job opening with National Public Radio. It's for a blogger position. Perfect, getting paid to do what I do. NPR needs a blogger (s) to write about education. Great, I can do that. In my introduction I mentioned that I've been writing my own blog and have a global readership. Hopefully that should get their attention. This was another simple application process. At least it's not a government application where they want to know everything about you including your dress size. Just kidding on that one. We'll see what happens with this opening.
